Area Info - JHB - Southern Suburbs You are here: Area Info

The southern suburbs of Johannesburg include the suburbs of Kenilworth, Ormonde, Meredale and South Hills. Just 5 minutes from Johannesburg's CBD the suburb of Ormonde can be found. A little beyond Gold Reef City in the southern reaches of the bustling city is its nearest neighbours Mondeor and Soweto. Further south a significant amount of underdeveloped and vacant agricultural land is publicly owned, and the city government is currently in the process of selling large tracts of it for development.

Soweto to the south of Johannesburg may sound like a traditional African name, but the word was originally an acronym for "South Western Townships". The growth of Soweto was phenomenal but unplanned. Recent years have seen Soweto become a site of massive development projects and a major tourist attraction in the country.

Turffontein was the largest concentration camp in Johannesburg during the Anglo Boer War. The camp was located where the Turffontein Racecourse is now, and housed about 5000 people. The racecourse hosts the Summer Cup one of three major races in South Africa.

The Turffontein racecourse, in the south of Johannesburg, is the home of the Summer Cup. The Summer Cup is dubbed as Africa's richest horse race and draws thousands of fashion lovers in their finest dress each year.
